Tantra for two, or tantra in four hands.

Origin

Tantra is a body-centred strand of Indian religious practice, visible in Hindu and Buddhist texts from around the sixth century, in which breath and attention are the working material rather than muscle. The massage carrying the name today is a twentieth-century Western reading of it, far narrower than the tradition — but honest about the two things it borrowed: the breath, and the refusal to hurry.

How it goes

Breath sets the pace and everything else follows it. The therapist matches your rate first, then slows their own by a fraction and lets you come along, which is most of the method and takes about ten minutes to do anything. Strokes run head to foot without stopping where one muscle ends, so the hour has no parts to it. With two of you in the room there are two rates to follow and the pair take one each; the gap between them usually closes on its own around the middle, and nobody tries to close it sooner.

What to expect

It opens slowly, hands resting before they move, your breathing matched to the therapist's rather than the other way around. The strokes run the whole length of the body without stopping at whichever muscle they cross, so the hour reads as continuous rather than divided into parts. Two people in one room will settle at different rates, often several minutes apart, and the therapists let that happen instead of correcting it. Nothing is steered toward an end point, which is why the session tends to feel longer than the clock says.

Couples who arrive at different speeds and would rather not be put on one clock, and anyone who books massage and finds their head still running at the end of it.

Afterwards

A settling that goes deeper than muscle — most people describe it afterwards as having been put down rather than worked on. Couples tend to leave quieter with each other than they arrived.
