What Two Therapists in One Room Actually Means

Two therapists is the most misread line on the price list. It does not mean one person working through the two of you in turn — it means two full sessions running side by side, at the same time, in one room.

Of everything on the price list, one line gets misread more than the rest: two therapists, €360 an hour. People read it as a surcharge, or as a way of splitting one session between two customers, or as one therapist working through the two of you in turn for double the money. It is none of those. It is the most literal line we publish. Two therapists means two therapists, for the two of you, in one room, at the same time.

Take the arithmetic first, because it settles the suspicion fastest. A single therapist is €180 an hour. Two therapists are €360 an hour. That is two full fees side by side. Neither fee is reduced for sharing a room, and neither is inflated for it. Two hours is €720 and three hours is €1,080 for exactly the same reason — the rate is one therapist's rate, counted twice, for as long as they are both there. The prices page lists it without any arrangement that makes it look cleverer than it is.

Simultaneous, not sequential

The practical difference is the one that matters to the two of you. A pair work at the same time. One therapist takes one of you, the other takes the other, and the whole hour runs in parallel. You are not lying there listening to your partner's session and waiting for your turn. You are in your own session, a metre and a half away, while they are in theirs.

The sequential version does exist and some couples prefer it. One therapist, two sessions back to back, at the single rate — €360 for two hours of work that happens to be split between the two of you, an hour each. It costs the same as one hour of a pair and takes twice as long, and while one of you is being worked on, the other is reading, dozing or out of the room. Some couples like that the room stays quieter. Most discover that what they actually wanted was to come out of it together, and that only a pair does that.

The agreement between the two of them

Something happens before anything begins that clients almost never see. The pair fix their running order between them, usually in under a minute and usually in the hallway. Who starts face down. Where the turn falls. Which long passages land at roughly the same point. They are not synchronising the two sessions — the sessions stay separate, and should — they are synchronising the shape of them so the room keeps a single cadence instead of two that keep interrupting one another.

Pressure is set on each of you individually and is rarely the same on both sides of the room. Technique is chosen individually too. One of you can take something slow and drawn out while the other takes deep classical work through the back, and the pair will still land the two endings within a minute or two of each other. That coordination is the actual product. It is much harder than either session is on its own, and it is the reason two therapists is not simply twice as good as one.

Where it stops

Two therapists working on one person is a different thing again — that is four-hand, four hands on one body, and it is priced identically because it occupies the same two people for the same hour. What is not priced is a whole night with a pair. An overnight with a single therapist is €1,250 across eight hours; the two-therapist version is arranged on enquiry, every time, because the shape of it depends on the night. We do not publish a figure for it, and anyone quoting one is inventing it.

With forty-five therapists on the roster and bookings running at any hour, a pair can usually be put together for the same evening. Confirmation takes about ten minutes and arrival in the centre is twenty to thirty. What the two of you need to decide beforehand is smaller than it feels: how long, and roughly what each of you wants. The pairing itself is our problem.
