Origin

The full-body oil session with no segment breaks in it comes out of the loosening of Swedish technique on the California coast in the 1960s and 70s — Esalen most famously — where the long connected stroke replaced working one limb at a time and then putting it down. Everything slow on this page is descended from that change of shape.

How it goes

Oil is warmed before it is poured and re-warmed as it goes, which matters more than any individual stroke: cold oil makes a body brace, and a braced body cannot be worked. Weight is used rather than grip — forearm as often as hand, leaning rather than pressing — so the pressure arrives broad and slow instead of pointed. The therapist sets it by what the muscle gives back rather than by what was asked for at the door. Booked for two, the pair keep to the same stage of the hour rather than the same stroke.

What to expect

It begins as straightforwardly good massage — back, shoulders, the places you already knew were tight — and the shift, when it comes, is gradual enough that you would struggle to name the minute. The oil is warmed first, and the therapist works without breaks long enough for you to lose the thread of the time. Booked for two, the therapists take one of you each and keep to roughly the same stage of the hour, which matters far more than matching stroke for stroke. Both of you are brought out of it slowly.

Will the oil mark the hotel's sheets?

Not if the towels are used, and they arrive with the therapists rather than being borrowed from the bathroom. The oil goes on skin, not on linen, and what stays on comes off in a shower. Nothing of the session is left in the room.

Is it always full-body, or can we keep it to one area?

Either. Full-body is the default shape, and if one of you wants most of the time spent on a back that has had a week of it, say so at the start and the rest is arranged around it. The two of you can ask for different things.

How do we choose between this and tantra?

Pace and intent. Sensual is warm oil and a body being worked, with the speed read off you as it goes. Tantra takes breath as its material and goes nowhere in particular with it. Two people who want the familiar thing done unusually well take this one; two who want the hour to stop resembling massage take the other.

Can this be booked with two therapists?

Yes. Four hands on one of you, or one each if you are two — €360 an hour for the pair, which is €720 for two hours and €1,080 for three. An overnight with two of them is quoted on enquiry rather than published, because overnight is a block rate and not an hourly one.
