Four People in a Hotel Room: How the Space Actually Works

A couples booking puts four people in a room built for two. It works more often than it sounds, and the rooms that defeat it are never the ones couples worry about in advance.

A couples booking puts four people in a room designed for two. That sentence stops a certain number of bookings before they are ever sent, usually with a message that begins by apologising for the size of the room. It is worth saying plainly: it works far more often than it sounds like it should, and the rooms that actually defeat it are never the ones people worry about beforehand.

Here is the honest requirement. Two working surfaces, side by side, with roughly seventy centimetres of clear floor down the outside of each — enough for a therapist to move the full length of a body without reversing into furniture. Plus the bed, which in most rooms is doing one of the two jobs anyway. That is the whole specification. It is less than the mental image of four adults in a hotel room suggests, because the mental image has everyone standing up.

What rooms in this city are actually like

Amsterdam has two kinds of room and they fail and succeed at opposite things.

The canal-house room is beautiful, narrow, and often up a staircase that was built for people carrying nothing. Floor area is tight, ceilings slope, and the bed frequently sits against a wall. What these rooms have is depth — a long thin room takes two surfaces end-to-end more easily than a square one takes them side by side, and a pair will simply rearrange the plan rather than the furniture. The staircase costs a couple of minutes on arrival and nothing else.

The modern room near the ring or out toward Zuidas is the opposite: square, level, generous through the middle, with a desk and a chair that move in ten seconds. These rooms take a couples booking without anyone thinking about it. So do airport hotel rooms at Schiphol, which are arranged on enquiry rather than as a standard booking, and which tend to be the most straightforward spaces of all.

The genuinely difficult room is none of these. It is the very small apartment rental where the bed is a mezzanine and the floor is kitchen. That one we will tell you about when you send the address, and the fix is usually a different night rather than a different room.

The four minutes before anything starts

Arranging the room is quick and it is done by the therapists, not by the two of you. Suitcases go against a wall. The chair and the desk stool move. Lights come down to whatever the room offers, and in most rooms that means the bedside lamps and nothing else. If there is a second room or a bathroom with a door, one of you may be asked to use it for two minutes, which is about arrangement and not about modesty.

The door gets a do-not-disturb sign and that is the last time anyone thinks about the corridor. Two therapists arriving together at a hotel is unremarkable to a building that sees several hundred people cross its lobby in a day; the sign is for housekeeping, not for discretion.

Sound, and the thing couples actually ask about

The second question, once the floor plan is settled, is always about the neighbours. A session is quiet. Two sessions running side by side are quieter than one conversation, because after the first ten minutes most couples stop talking. Modern rooms are built to a sound standard that assumes televisions; canal houses are old, thick and largely solid. Neither has ever been the reason a booking went badly.

What does change the room is length. An hour with a pair at €360 is a compact thing that fits almost anywhere. Two hours at €720 or three at €1,080 spreads — people move to the bed between passages, someone opens a window, the room becomes an evening rather than an appointment. If the two of you are choosing a space with that in mind, the depth of the room matters more than its floor area. The couples booking and the guide both assume you are staying put afterwards, because everybody does.

If you are unsure, send the room type with the booking. It takes one line and we will tell you honestly. Nothing about this is improved by finding out at the door.
