Couples massage in your room vs a spa in Amsterdam, weighed up honestly

A couple on holiday has two ways to get a massage together: walk to a spa and share a treatment room, or have two therapists come to where you are sleeping. Here is how they differ.

Choosing a couples massage in your room vs a spa is a decision most visiting couples make quickly, often without noticing that there are two very different evenings on offer. Amsterdam has day spas and hotel wellness floors that sell side-by-side treatments. We are not one of them. We are an outcall service, which means two therapists travel to your hotel room or rented apartment, at any hour. This guide compares the two honestly, including the points where a spa is the right answer, so the two of you can pick the evening you actually want.

Couples massage in your room vs a spa: the short version

A spa gives you a treatment room designed for massage, a fixed menu and fixed opening hours. In-room gives you your own space, a schedule set by you, and no journey home afterwards. A spa suits a daytime plan built around a pool or sauna. In-room suits an evening, a late decision, or a couple who would rather not be in public once the session ends.

Getting there and getting back

The spa visit starts with a journey. On a city break that might be a tram across town or a walk in the rain, a check-in desk, changing rooms, robes and a short wait in a lounge. Afterwards the whole process runs backwards: dressing, drying hair, finding the way back through busy streets, often at the very moment the body wants to lie down.

With an in-room booking the journey belongs to the therapists. They travel together and reach any central address forty to sixty minutes after the booking is confirmed. When they leave, the two of you are already where you are sleeping. For many couples this single difference decides the question, because the part of a massage they value most is the hour after it, and a tram ride removes it.

Timing for two

Spas work to opening hours and appointment grids. The evening slots for couples are often the first to go, especially at weekends, and a treatment room for two is a scarce thing. If your plans shift by an hour, the booking usually cannot shift with them.

We answer messages at any hour, every day of the year, and a session can start at nine in the evening or two in the morning at the same rate. That flexibility is why so many couples write to us after dinner rather than days before. For a fixed date with meaning, an anniversary or a proposal weekend, booking ahead still gives you first choice of therapists, and the anniversary page explains how couples usually plan that evening.

Privacy

A spa is a public place with a reception desk, other guests in the corridors and staff moving between rooms. Treatment rooms have thin doors, and conversation in the next room is sometimes audible. Couples who are shy about being seen in robes, or who simply prefer not to share a lounge with strangers, notice this.

In your own room the only people present are the two of you and the two therapists. The door is yours to lock. The music is yours, or there is none. If you want to talk during the session you can, and if you want silence, that is easy too. The therapists arrive dressed for the street, carrying ordinary bags, and nothing about their visit is visible to anyone passing in the corridor.

The room itself

This is where a spa has a genuine advantage. Its tables are adjustable, the room is warm, the lighting is designed and there is a shower down the hall. A hotel room is not built for massage, and a rented canal-house apartment even less so.

In practice the gap is smaller than it sounds. The therapists bring oils, towels and a fresh cover for the bed, and they are used to working in rooms of every shape. What the two of you add takes five minutes: clear the floor beside the bed, raise the heating a little, dim the lights, shower beforehand. The guide on setting up a room for two therapists goes through it in more detail if your space is unusual.

What you are actually booking

A spa sells a treatment from a menu, usually a relaxation or aromatherapy massage of fixed length, sometimes with a bath or scrub added. The therapists are whoever is on shift that day.

We work differently. You can choose each therapist by name from the roster, read her profile first, and ask for a style for each of you separately. The techniques we offer for couples are listed on the couples massage page and include sensual, tantra and nuru sessions as well as a four-hand option for one partner. We do not offer clinical treatments such as deep tissue or sports massage; couples looking for those are better served at a spa or a physiotherapy clinic.

Cost for two

Spa prices for couples vary widely and often include use of a pool or sauna, which is part of what you pay for. Our rates are the same at any hour and depend only on how many therapists and how many guests are involved. A couple sharing one therapist, taking it in turns, is EUR 360 for an hour or EUR 720 for two. A couple with a therapist each is EUR 720 for an hour, EUR 1,080 for ninety minutes and EUR 1,440 for two hours. The full table is printed on every therapist's profile.

The payment pattern is also different from a spa. A deposit of half confirms any booking with two therapists, any first booking from a new client and anything arranged more than 24 hours ahead. It is paid in the WhatsApp thread by card, Revolut, Wise or crypto, and it is not refunded on cancellation, though one move to another date within 14 days is possible when asked more than 24 hours ahead. Whatever remains is settled once the pair are in the room, in cash, by card or in crypto. There is no travel fee and no night surcharge.

The hour after the session

Couples underestimate this part when they compare the two options on paper. At a spa, the session ends with a knock on the treatment room door and a reminder that the next guests are waiting. There is a relaxation lounge, usually, and a cup of herbal tea, but the room is no longer yours and the clock is still running. Within half an hour of lying down you are dressed and outside again.

At home or in your hotel, the therapists pack up quietly and leave, and the room stays exactly as warm and dim as it was. Nobody needs to get up. Some couples order room service, some open a bottle from the minibar, most simply fall asleep much earlier than they had planned. On a trip where every other evening involves restaurants, bars and walking back across bridges in the cold, a night that ends without leaving the room is often the one people talk about when they get home.

Weather, season and the Amsterdam factor

Amsterdam is a walking and cycling city, and its weather does not always cooperate. In autumn and winter the walk to a spa and back can mean wind off the IJ and rain that does not stop. In summer the centre is crowded and warm, and a sticky tram is the last thing a relaxed body needs. An in-room booking sidesteps both. It is also why so many of our couples bookings arrive on the evening of a wet day spent indoors at museums: the plan changes at six o'clock, and a message sent at seven brings the pair to the room before nine.

When a spa is the better choice

Go to a spa if the two of you want a whole afternoon, especially on a grey day when the idea of floating in warm water for three hours is the real attraction. Go to one if you are after a long afternoon of pools, saunas and steam rooms with a treatment in the middle. Go if you want a clinical or sports massage. Go if you prefer a venue with a reception desk and a menu. These are good reasons, and nothing about an in-room booking replaces them.

When in-room is the better choice

Choose in-room if the decision is being made in the evening, if the two of you want to stay in once the session is over, if privacy matters more than facilities, or if you want to choose the therapists yourselves. It is also the only one of the two that works at midnight. Couples on a short city break often find it becomes the evening they remember most, precisely because they did not have to go anywhere.

The wider FAQ

Is an in-room couples massage more expensive than a spa?

It depends on the spa and what is included. Our couples rates are EUR 720 an hour with a therapist each, or EUR 360 an hour with one therapist shared, the same at any time of day, with no travel fee.

Do we need a massage table in our room?

No. The therapists work on the bed with their own cover, oils and towels. Clearing the floor beside the bed is the only preparation that matters.

Can we book an in-room couples massage late at night?

Yes. Messages are answered around the clock and the pair reach central addresses forty to sixty minutes after confirmation, at the same rate as a daytime booking.

Do you offer deep tissue or sports massage for couples?

No. Couples who want a clinical treatment are better served at a spa or physiotherapy clinic. The formats we offer for two are listed on the couples massage page.

Is a deposit needed for an in-room couples booking?

Yes for any booking with two therapists, any first booking and anything arranged more than 24 hours ahead. It is half the fee, paid by card, Revolut, Wise or crypto, and it is not refunded.
